How does hyperbaric chamber work for treating bends?
The core of hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy for decompression sickness lies in pressurization and oxygen administration. The high pressure inside the chamber physically compresses nitrogen bubbles in the blood vessels, reducing their volume and clearing blockages. At the same time, inhaling pure oxygen creates a significant pressure gradient in the blood, accelerating the dissolution and elimination of nitrogen from the bubbles. Additionally, high-concentration oxygen rapidly corrects tissue hypoxia caused by bubble blockages, thereby protecting nerve and muscle function. The earlier treatment is administered, the better the outcome.
Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy affect blood pressure?
Blood pressure often rises temporarily during hyperbaric oxygen therapy (systolic pressure increases by 10–20 mmHg) due to peripheral vasoconstriction caused by the high-pressure environment. However, following a long-term course of treatment, improved vascular function and tissue oxygenation may result in a mild blood pressure-lowering effect in patients with hypertension. If blood pressure is uncontrolled (>160/100 mmHg), treatment should be postponed. Blood pressure should be monitored during treatment and typically returns to normal after exiting the chamber.
